The evergreen comedy star Jeff Stevenson gave us an insight into the inner workings of a jobbing comedian when he graced the podcast in 2020. With so many mutual friends in the business including the legendary comedy writer Colin Edmonds and the great musical director Mike Dixon, we quickly found common ground. Yet perhaps our biggest connection is that we were both lucky enough to call the legendary writer and broadcaster John Hannam a friend. Jeff first met John at Albany Prison’s social club on the Isle of Wight when he was just eighteen and began a friendship which would last until John’s death in 2021. Indeed, throughout the succeeding decades, whenever Jeff found himself on the Isle of Wight, he would always catch up with John for either a radio interview or a friendly chat over a drink Like so many of us, Jeff was lucky enough to witness the magic of John Hannam on many occasions and his enthusiasm helped to spur Jeff onto bigger and better things.
Such a thing came about out of the blue in 1983 Jeff became host of the ITV panel show Punchlines alongside the great Lennie Bennett as two teams of comedians battled it out for ultimate glory. These were the days when ITV saw a substantial boom in popularity as a result of genial executives such as David Bell and Michael Grade who took advantage of the huge financial investment in commercial television during this time. Shows such as Live From Her Majesty’s featured some of the biggest names in entertainment and a spot on the bill had the potential to transform your career. Jeff appeared alongside his hero Jimmy Tarbuck who was the longtime host of the show in its various guises and this cemented his success. Jimmy would have a lasting influence on the young comedian which has continued to this day.
Despite TV plaudits, Jeff has always thrived on his live shows and witnessing him in full command of an audience is something quite remarkable. As an experienced performer, he instinctively knows the appropriate material for the right audience and most importantly, when to push the envelope. In recent years, Jeff has become a fixture on the cruise ship circuit and plays to packed theatres on some of the world’s most popular liners. For this, he is required to ensure that his material is suitable for each type of audience. Through this experience, Jeff has had a ringside seat to the development of luxury sea travel and has overseen everything from en suite rooms to IMAX cinemas and self contained theatres all onboard. It’s obvious that this is a part of his career that he really enjoys and he’s probably not going to hang up his sea legs anytime soon.
Despite meeting Jeff in person just the once, he has become an incredibly loyal and generous contributor to the podcast over the last five years and no celebration of Beyond The Title would be complete without him. The complete embodiment of a working comedian, he remains a wonderful ambassador to the art of live entertainment and long may he reign over audiences with his unique observational wit for many years to come. Yet above all, it means so much to me to be able to call Jeff Stevenson a true friend!
